Rois & Reine

In pursuit of my budding fan relationship with French movie star Mathieu Amalric (above) I watched his 2004 comedy-melodrama called Rois & reine, directed by Arnaud Desplechin.

The film primarily belongs to Emmanuelle Devos (above at right and below at left) – with a witty bit part assigned to the apparently immortal Catherine Deneuve (widely held to be the most beautiful woman in the world throughout my long-ago youth).

Deneuve plays the psychiatrist who directs the clinic where Amalric is mistakenly incarcerated for the first half of the story. During one of their interviews (below) Amalric suddenly looks at her and exclaims, "You know what? You're really very beautiful."

Deneuve smiles vaguely and murmurs, "People have sometimes mentioned that to me."
