In 2008 the Los Angeles County Museum of Art mounted an exhibition called Hearst the Collector.  William Randolph Hearst (1860-1951) was commemorated as "the greatest individual donor" in the history of this young public museum. His first love seems to have been the heavily restored classical marbles that had circulated as emblems of power in Europe since the Renaissance. As the Great Depression squeezed various noble collections, the American tycoon was able to make many deals. "An obituary estimated that Hearst alone had accounted for 25 percent of the world's art market in the 1920s and '30s."
