"For most of the twentieth century, Cotman was the most widely admired English watercolorist, surpassing even Turner in popularity." This is the stated opinion of curators at the British Museum, and it is borne out by many works of English fiction from the same period, with tasteful upper-class interiors regularly indicated in shorthand for the reader by the "Cotmans" on the walls. Agatha Christie does this in almost every book.
