BARTOLOMEO CORIOLANO (c. 1599-1676?) – Woodcutter; born Bologna. Presumed to be the son of Cristoforo Coriolano. Bartolomeo learnt woodcutting from his father, and later drawing in the studio of Guido Reni, whose works Bartolomeo interpreted into woodcuts, continuing the Italian chiaroscuro woodcut tradition begun by Ugo da Carpi. Documented in Rome from 1627, where he made his first woodcut 'Allegory of the Alliance between Peace and Abundance' after Reni. Must have returned with Reni to Bologna, where the two worked together closely between 1637-42. Later years less well studied, but he seems to have died in Rome.

A chiaroscuro woodcut was printed from a number of blocks put through the press onto the same sheet one after another. There would be a ground block plus an additional block for each layer of color. Coriolano made the chiaroscuro woodcuts in this group by carving sometimes two, sometimes three, sometimes four blocks per image.
