Renaissance

It is always the Renaissance,
some of us bold and foolish,
some of us pious and bookish,
some of us muleish, raffish, some
of us lacking polish. It is new,
always, no matter what it says
above the doorway, cracked by
the usual irony; it's new anyway.
We can't hold more history than
a handful. What is man
that thou art mindful? Catches,
songs, rhymes, trifles, ditties, a
sphinx in the sand, a statue
in the city, precepts badly
mangled, the good and bad lessons
tangled till no virtue lives
beyond story. Time destroys
precocity, and what so tires
and defeats you now will soon
refresh like novelty. You too
will happily appropriate
Holinshed's Chronicle and
exploit it stylishly.
